whimsical

UK/ˈwɪmzɪkəl/
adjectiveC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #9,223 of 15,258neutral

Whimsical means playfully odd and unpredictable. A whimsical design, whimsical humour, whimsical and charming.

It is affectionate at moderate strength and dismissive at full — calling a decision whimsical means it was made on a passing fancy, which is a criticism when consequences follow. Of art and design it means charmingly fanciful. Note whim, from which it comes, meaning a sudden idea.
