Aquatics are the sports carried on in the water. The aquatics centre, aquatics programme, compete in aquatics.
It is the umbrella term the governing bodies use, covering swimming, diving, water polo, artistic swimming and open water. It takes a singular verb, and it is the word on the building rather than the one anybody says at the poolside.
