audition

UK/ɔːˈdɪʃn̩/
nounB1Very common — you will meet it every day · #1,959 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: auditions

An audition is the tryout where performers compete for a role. Go to an audition, an open audition, audition for the part.

It is short, competitive and mostly decided on things outside the performer's control — an actor who does everything right may still be the wrong height for whoever is already cast. Blind auditions behind a screen changed the composition of orchestras measurably. Note that the Latin means a hearing, from audire.
