blender

UK/ˈblɛn.də/US/ˈblɛn.dɚ/
nounA2+Common in everyday speech and writing · #6,508 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: blenders

A blender is the loud jug machine with spinning blades. Use a blender, a hand blender, blitz it in the blender.

The blade does not chop so much as tear, and the shape of the jug matters as much as the motor because it has to keep pushing the contents back down. Never fill one with anything hot and sealed: the steam expands and blows the lid off.

From blend + -er. blend comes from Middle English blenden, either from Old English blandan, blondan, ġeblandan, ġeblendan or from Old Norse blanda (“to blend, mix”) (which was originally a strong verb with the present-tense stem blend; compare blendingr (“a blending, a mixture; a half-breed”)), whence also Danish blande, or from a blend of the Old English and Old Norse terms; both ultimately from Proto-Germanic blandaną (“to blend; mix; combine”). Compare Middle Dutch blanden (“to mix”), Gothic 𐌱𐌻𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌰𐌽, cu блєсти (“to go astray”).
