Other forms: comedians
A comedian is somebody whose job is being funny. A stand-up comedian, a stand-up, the comedian was booed.
Stand-up comedian is the fullest term and stand-up the usual short one. Comedienne for a woman is dated and mostly dropped. The word is also used sarcastically of anybody making a joke at the wrong moment: everybody is a comedian. Note comedy, which covers the whole form; comic, both the adjective and a noun for a performer; and comic timing, which is the thing that cannot be taught.

comedian is a performer.
Greek komoidia comes from komos, a revel, plus aoidos, a singer — a comedy was originally a song sung at a festival procession. Tragedy, its opposite, means goat-song, and nobody has ever fully explained why.
