comedy

UK/ˈkɒmədi/US/ˈkɑmədi/
nounA2+Very common — you will meet it every day · #2,213 of 15,258leans written

Other forms: comedies

A comedy is a funny film or play made to make you laugh. A romantic comedy, watch a comedy, stand-up comedy.

In classical drama a comedy was defined by its ending rather than its jokes — it ends well, where a tragedy ends badly — which is why Dante's Divine Comedy is called one. Modern usage means simply funny. Note comedian, comic; and that the Greek komoidia is from a word for revel.
