impersonator

nounC1Occasional — familiar, but not everyday · #10,297 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: impersonators

An impersonator is somebody who performs as another person. An Elvis impersonator, a celebrity impersonator, a police impersonator.

As entertainment it is a whole trade, and the Elvis ones alone number in the tens of thousands. As a crime it is serious: a police impersonator is committing a specific offence, and the word covers both without changing shape.
