Marketing is the study of how goods are promoted and sold. Study marketing, a marketing campaign, the marketing department.
It is much wider than advertising, which is only one part: the classic four are product, price, place and promotion, and the first three are decided long before anybody writes an advertisement. Market research asks what people want and often gets told what they think they should say.
