A quilt is a thick padded bed covering. A patchwork quilt, under the quilt, quilt the layers.

It is three layers stitched through: a top, a filling and a backing, and the stitching is what keeps the filling from bunching. Patchwork quilting became a serious folk art in America, and the AIDS Memorial Quilt is the largest piece of community folk art in the world.
