Other forms: artists
An artist is a person who creates paintings, music or other work of imagination. A young artist, the artist's studio, recording artist.
It covers the visual arts first and has spread to music, where recording artist is standard. Applied to a craft it means somebody very good at it — a con artist is a swindler and a piss artist is a drunk, both using the word ironically. Note artiste, which is the same word kept in French form for performers; and artistic, which describes work and temperament alike.
