adjectiveB2Common in everyday speech and writing · #3,719 of 15,258leans written

Artistic means having or showing skill in art. An artistic child, artistic licence, artistic direction.

It describes the person and the work alike. Artistic licence is the freedom to depart from fact for effect, and claiming it is a standard defence of a film that rearranged history. Note artist, artistry; and that the French artistique gave English the word in the nineteenth century.
