photo

UK/ˈfəʊ̯.təʊ̯/US/ˈpʰoː.ʈoː/
nounA1Very common — you will meet it every day · #1,370 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: photos

A photo is an image caught by a camera. Take a photo, a family photo, photo album.

It is short for photograph and entirely standard, which is unusual — most such shortenings stay informal. A photo finish is one decided by the camera, and the phrase is used of any close contest. Note that photograph means drawing with light, from the Greek for light and writing.
