telephoto

nounB2+Rare in speech; mostly a word you read · #11,916 of 15,258neutral

Other forms: telephotos

A telephoto is a lens that magnifies distant subjects. A telephoto lens, shot on a telephoto, a long telephoto.

It also flattens the picture, making distant things look stacked together, which is why portraits are shot on one. The design packs a long focal length into a shorter barrel, and that is what telephoto strictly means.
