Photogenic means looking good in photographs. Very photogenic, a photogenic town, not photogenic.
It is not the same as good-looking: the camera flattens and freezes, so photogenic faces are those whose structure survives that — which is why the two qualities come apart so often. It applies to places as readily as people. Note that the word originally meant producing light, which is what photogenic bacteria do, and the modern sense borrowed it.
1adjectivephotogenicLooking good in photographs.
“She's so photogenic that she looks great in every holiday picture.”
photogenic is a quality of photographing well.
Photo-, light, plus -genic, producing. The word first meant light-producing, and the sense of photographing well was borrowed from photograph rather than built fresh.
From photo + genic.
